PROSPERITY GOSPEL AND THE BURDEN OF POVERTY: THE NIGERIAN CONUNDRUM

Abstract

The proliferation of churches in Nigeria is evident by the ubiquitous places of worship. Religion is perceived to be a big industry and it seems to be thriving very well; although only the leaders are perhaps getting the dividends. The poverty level is scandalous, with so many barely able to eke out a living. With so many purveyors of prosperity gospel, claiming to have the key to prosperity, one may wonder why poverty is still endemic among their followers. A survey of the modus operandi adopted by prosperity preachers to attain the goal of prosperity revealed that it is lopsided, ignoring its biblical basis. The study therefore examined the ethical and moral foundation for prosperity.
