TOWARDS AN EVALUATION OF CONTEMPORARY DIVINATION IN THE LIGHT OF DIVINE REVELATION

Abstract

There are various conceptions about divination in the Christian world today.  While some believe that it has a legitimate place, others posit that its practice is dangerous and unacceptable especially to the Christian.  This article has tried to evaluate these various understandings concerning divination especially in the light of divine revelation.  The historical and Participant-observation methods of inquiry were utilized in the work. These methodologies invoke a great deal of experience, depth and observation.   The work began by looking at the origin of divination and proceeded to the types, functions, and its place today.  It sought to find out the interplay between divination and divine revelation.  It especially emphasized the perceived dangers of doing divination with the Bible where the ‘Bible is asked to rotate.’ The fact that Paul exorcized the spirit of divination from the damsel in Acts 16:16-18, who nonetheless made some valid revelations about Paul and his companions and eternal life, casts some levels of aspersion on it, and seems to challenge its practice hence, the author’s injunction to everyone to be wary of its subtle persuasions.
